Lionheart Tour

The Lionheart Project tour saw three giant crocheted lions travelling the country in a 16 metre long illuminated glass case. Starting on 1 May 2012 at Chatsworth in Derbyshire, the lions toured the East Midlands before arriving at the Natural History Museum in London in time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Harking back to the travelling menagerie show, the lions passed through towns and villages, resting at venues in Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, and Northampton calling in at events such as SO Festival, Skegness and the Olympic Torch Relay. The lions were visited by over a million people across the venues, with countless more enjoying sightings of Lionheart on the road.

“It was fabulous to see the lions at Chatsworth during the week of the Queen’s Jubilee! Thank you for sharing this fun art with the public. It looked quite superior with the amazing house and beautiful grounds as a backdrop.”  Kate Eggleston

“WOW!!!!!! I have been to see your lions at chatsworth 3 times now: once on my own, then to take my daughter and 2 year old grandson and then my 86 year old mum. All of us love them”. Ruth Stanley

“Congratulations it's magnificent!” Evelien Verkerk

“How lovely to find crocheted lions in the middle of Louth this morning, many thanks for bringing us some art.”  Susan Banks

“This is an amazing project and it's just fantastic to see how your lions reflects crocheters' love for crochet, natural yarn and animals altogether with mine. I love it!”  Véronique Wing

“Thank you very much for bringing the Giant lions to Skegness they were great to see and the amazing work put in to them.” Stephen Lefley

“I have just read about your completed project in the Yorkshire Post and all I can say is - Wow - how fantastic - congratulations on your achievement. My grandmother taught me to crochet and now I am crocheting for my grandchildren, but nothing on the scale of your wonderful lions!” Linda Smith

“Just wanted to tell you how amazing your lions are. Saw them on TV and they looked so real. It is such a shame that they will not be visiting Scotland. Maybe later?” Gail Buchanan

“I saw your fabulous Lions outside the Curve last week and again as they were driven down Queens Road in Clarendon Park. I thought they were absolutely beautiful and an amazing concept and design project. I hope they get the recognition they deserve as they travel down the country. I look forward to seeing more of your work.” Sue Ryan

“WOW, they are incredible. I've been telling everyone I see about it, and quite a few friends are now heading down to the Curve to see them. You should be so proud of yourself to create such a stunning piece of art. I hope the rest of your travels go well, and thanks so much once again for sending me the pictures, they will certainly have a page in our album of High Sheriff events, as one of our highlights of the year”. Diana Brooks

“Just wanted to say I saw the lions when we went to the Curve in Leicester a couple of weeks ago and I thought they were amazing (much over-used word, but so appropriate here). Such an imaginative concept and stunning craftsmanship. Thanks :-)” Dawn Emmerson

“I thought your work was outstanding, believing it to be by an international artist and was surprised to discover you are Leicester based. Congratulations on your success. Hope you like my drawing”. Tim Clarke

“I just wanted to congratulate you on the fantastic Lions - we have seen them today outside of the Curve in Leicester - they are so impressive, you must have very sore fingers after completing such a huge project!” Debbie Lucas

“Congratulations on your inspirational lion creations. Your descriptive crochet creates the lions musculature beautifully, describing the rippling muscles under the smooth fur coated skin”. Anne Cole

“I think your work is absolutely fantastic! I think your lion is truly MAGNIFICENT and I hope the finished project, when it's 'on the road', lands somewhere local so that I can get a close-up. I can't wait to see the finished piece, I'm certain the three lions will look TOTALLY STUPENDOUS!!!” Jill Thorpe

“I'm a faithful admirer of your crochet work, especially of the Lionheart project! Bravo, and congratulations on the exhibit! I visited them at the Natural History Museum in London earlier this month and was absolutely awe struck!” Salena Baca

“Fantastic to find out about your projects/work - beautiful and hugely inspiring. Will your lions be heading into Scotland?” Jenny Soep

“Very impressive work that you're doing. Keep up the good work, I appreciate it very much!” Dan Nemeth

“Just returned home to Canada from a trip to England. I had seen the Lions before I left Canada and they were on my “must see” list for the trip. We saw them at Twyecross Zoo – they were absolutely wonderful. I wish I could have gotten in the “cage” with them. They have such presence and grace from a distance and up close, the texture from the wool and crocheting added so much to the effect. Thanks so much for your work!!! “ Susan Pickles / Canada

“We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit & are filled with admiration for all your dedication & inspiration. I don't think we knew what to expect & where completely overwhelmed. It is incredible to think of all the hours that have gone into the project”. Ann Hollingworth & Co
